Madrid to Toledo: How to Get There on Your Own (Train, Bus, or Car)

If you’re thinking of skipping the guided tour and making a day trip to Toledo on your own, there’s good news. It’s very doable!
In fact, Toledo is one of the easiest day trips from Madrid that you can plan for a quick escape.
You can hop on a train, catch a bus, or even drive yourself. Here are a few more detailed options.
🚊 By Train: The Fastest Way
The AVE high-speed train takes only half an hour from Madrid Atocha station to Toledo train station. After arriving in Toledo, you can either walk to the historic center, a 10-15 minute walk, or take a taxi.
Here’s why the train is a good option:
- Trains run frequently, typically every hour during the day.
- You can book your ticket online via RENFE through Omio or Trainline.
- Tip: Make sure to book your seat in advance especially if you’re traveling on the weekend or a holiday.
💡Pro Tip: Once you get to Toledo, the walk up to the historic center is uphill, making for amazing and scenic views, but it can be steep at points. If you’d rather skip the climb, the closer you get to the historic center, there’s an escalator that can take you all the way up to Old Town. Don’t miss it because I did on my first visit.

🚍 By Bus: The Budget-Friendly Option
ALSA buses are a great option for traveling between Madrid and Toledo, which I have personally taken.
The buses depart from Plaza Elíptica in Madrid and arrives at Toledo’s main bus station. It’s a 15-20-minute walk from the bus station to the historic city center, which is very doable.
Here’s why the bus is a good option:
- Travel time is around 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Buses run roughly every 30 minutes, starting early in the morning.
- You can buy tickets at the station or online on ALSA’s or Omio’s website.

🚘 By Car: Best for Flexibility
Renting a car obviously gives you the ultimate freedom to explore Toledo, nearby villages and other viewpoints you want to see at your own pace. This could be great if you’re comfortable with driving in Europe or prefer to completely DIY your day trip from Madrid to Toledo.
Here’s why driving is a good option:
- Drive time can be around 1 hour, depending on traffic, but you’re on your own time so no need to check schedules, etc.
- Parking in Toledo’s historic center is available

How to Plan a Day Trip to Toledo from Madrid

A day trip to Toledo is one of the best ways to explore the richness of Spanish culture just outside Madrid, while discovering more of Spain’s beautiful towns nearby.
Lucky for us, planning a day trip to Toledo from Madrid is easier than you might think. With just a little prep, you can have a smooth, unforgettable experience traveling to Toledo.
Here are some of my best tips to keep in mind
- Start early: To get the most out of your day trip in Toledo, I recommend starting early. All tours begin early for a reason, and that is because Toledo deserves a full day of exploration. If you decide to DIY your trip, catch your train or bus no later than 9:00 AM to beat the crowds as much as possible, and enjoy a quieter morning around the city!
- You won’t see everything in a day, and that’s okay: Focus on the top sights like the Toledo Cathedral, Alcázar, Jewish Quarter, and Mirador del Valle for views you won’t forget. Have lunch in between and leave some time to wander. Toledo is the perfect city to just walk around.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Speaking of walking around, Toledo is built on a hill and has mostly cobblestone streets. That said, this trip is not the time to break in new sandals! Bring comfy sneakers with grip so your feet aren’t hurting by the end of your day trip!
- Book Ahead: If you’re going the DIY route but still want a guided experience, consider booking entry tickets or a walking tour of Toledo online before your day trip. Consider skip-the-line tickets for the Cathedral or an all-inclusive ticket for the Cathedral, Alcazar, Monastery, and Jewish Quarter, for a better experience getting into these popular sites.
- Leave Before Sunset: Evenings are beautiful in Toledo, but transportation options may become more limited later (unless you have secured your round-trip ticket beforehand). To comfortably return to Madrid, aim to catch your return train or bus between 5:00 and 7:00 PM.
Why You Should Take a Day Trip to Toledo from Madrid

Why not??
Ok, in all seriousness, Toledo is truly one of the most beautiful, historic, charming cities I’ve visited in Spain, and the fact that it’s only up to an hour away from Madrid, is an invitation to visit it.
If you love:
- Historic medieval walls
- Gorgeous cobblestone streets
- Panoramic hilltop view of the Tagus River
- Artisanal workshops

- Seeing everything on foot
Then you’ll absolutely want to visit Toledo!
The city has a unique blend of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish influences, which can be seen everywhere, from the architecture to the food and much more. This is why it’s often called the “City of Three Cultures.”
And honestly? It’s just nice to escape the city for a bit.
Madrid is vibrant, fast-paced, and exciting, but Toledo offers something a little slower, quieter, and more charming.
