Madrid Bucket List: 27 Unforgettable Things to Do in Spain’s Capital

Looking to see what must-do experiences you should add to your Madrid bucket list? This is the post for you!

Planning an itinerary to a city can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never been.

You may only be there for a day or a few, so you wonder what’s truly worth exploring and experiencing. Without getting too bogged down in extra info, in this post, I’ll break down some of the most popular things to do in Madrid, as well as a few personal favorites as someone who has spent some time there.

I lived in Madrid for one year as an English teacher, and during that time, I had plenty of opportunities to get to know the city inside out.

From visiting the main sites to enjoying some of the lesser-known activities, my stay in Madrid was extremely memorable, which I know is what you’re looking to experience when visiting.

Ready to jump in and get inspiration for your Madrid trip? Let’s get started!

Madrid Bucket List: 27 Unforgettable Things to Do in Spain’s Capital

1. Tour the Royal Palace of Madrid

Smiling visitor standing outside the Royal Palace of Madrid, a top cultural highlight to add to your Madrid bucket list. Regal interior of the Royal Palace of Madrid featuring ornate Spanish crests and artwork—perfect for a Madrid bucket list.
The Royal Palace was the first main attraction I remember visiting when I first moved to Madrid!

You can’t visit Madrid and skip out on one of the most popular sites: the Royal Palace of Madrid! Did you know it’s known as Europe’s largest royal palace?

With over 3,000 rooms, the palace’s architecture is enough to make you want to go see it for yourself and imagine what the lives of the Spanish monarchs were like back in the day.

Step through the grand staircase and explore the Royal Armory, the lavish Throne Room, and much more!

It’s a popular site to explore in Madrid, so I recommend either waking up at the crack of dawn to get in line or, better yet, booking a skip-the-line ticket as a better alternative.

2. Admire the Almudena Cathedral

Exterior of Almudena Cathedral, one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see for any Madrid bucket list.

Right across from the entrance to the Royal Palace is the Almudena Cathedral, which impresses with its unique blend of classical and modern design. It’s also where the modern King and Queen of Spain married in 2004!

Entry is free, but for a small fee, you can climb to the rooftop and enjoy amazing views of Madrid, especially on a clear day.

There is also a crypt you can check out while you’re there, but other than that, stepping in just to check it out is a cool experience. Plus, it’s free!

3. People-watch in Plaza Mayor

Lively afternoon at Plaza Mayor with giant soap bubbles entertaining families, a fun addition to any Madrid bucket list.

Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid’s most famous squares and the perfect place to explore, people-watch, grab a coffee, or, better yet, have a famous Madrid bocata de calamari (fried calamari sandwich).

The square is always lively, with restaurant terraces, street performers, and locals meeting up all year round. It’s surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, and it’s one of the best free things to do in Madrid, so you have to check it out!

Depending on when you visit, some of the city’s main music events and other activities take place here, too.

4. Visit Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol’s vibrant city square surrounded by historic buildings, a central spot on your Madrid bucket list.

Puerta del Sol is the symbolic center of Madrid and all of Spain. It’s where the country’s “kilometer zero” plaque is located, which signifies the country’s geographical center. Getting a picture there is a must-do on your Madrid bucket list itinerary!

This busy square is where many locals gather on New Year’s Eve, too, and eat the twelve grapes for good luck in the coming year. It’s also famous for the statue of the bear and strawberry tree, which symbolizes the city.

There is almost always something happening in Sol. I remember when I was living there, every Saturday, a Mexican Mariachi band played in the busy space, which was so nice to hear. It felt like a little piece of home while being so far away.

There’s always something happening in Puerta del Sol, and it’s very central, so you’ll definitely walk across it at one point or another. The city’s main shopping street is only moments away from here.

5. Walk the Lively Gran Vía

Views of Gran Vía, Madrid’s famous shopping and entertainment street—essential for your Madrid bucket list adventures.

Walk through Spain’s “Broadway” – Gran Vía! Packed with shopping, theater, and lights, it’s Madrid’s most famous avenue for all things entertainment. Walk along and see for yourself.

Whether you’re shopping during the day or exploring the night lights in the evening, Gran Vía is always jumping with energy, so there’s never a dull moment.

You’ll find the largest Primark in Spain on Gran Vía, along with all the shopping stores your heart could ever desire, so don’t miss out if you want to go shopping!

6. Catch Sunset at the Temple of Debod

Temple of Debod at sunset with its reflection in the water, a magical and unique stop on your Madrid bucket list.

Did you know that Madrid has an actual Egyptian temple? It’s the Temple of Debod, set in a park with immaculate views of Madrid, including the Royal Palace of Madrid.

It’s a popular place to explore at any time, but especially during sunset, when you can get some seriously beautiful views.

So, bring your camera and some snacks early on to catch a good spot to hang out and see the sunset.

7. Eat a Calamari Sandwich Near Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor at night with terrace dining and a fried calamari sandwich in hand—classic Madrid street food that belongs on your Madrid bucket list.

A true Madrid street food staple, the bocadillo de calamares is simple but so satisfying.

Head to Bar Postas, located in Plaza Mayor, to try one.

The sandwich is crunchy and salty, served on a crusty piece of baguette. It’s the perfect quick lunch idea, especially if you’re in between activities around the city.

8. Sip Vermouth in La Latina

Traditional Spanish tapas spread with wine, cheese, olives, tortilla española, and chorizo—must-try bites for your Madrid bucket list.

La Latina is one of the best areas to go de tapeo, or tapa hopping, especially on the weekends.

Locals fill La Latina’s terraces to eat and drink, especially vermút de grifo (vermouth on tap), and snack on olives, anchovies, patatas bravas and other tapas.

It’s one of the city’s most laid-back traditions, and it’s one you should enjoy for yourself. There’s nothing like a night of tapas, good conversation, and people-watching, so make it to La Latina for a slice of this!

9. Go on a Tapas Crawl in Malasaña

Speaking of tapas, another great place to explore the local food scene is Malasaña, one of the coolest areas in Madrid, with tons of great tapas bars.

If you’re traveling solo or it’s your first time in Madrid and you have no idea how to go about tapas, I absolutely recommend joining a tapas crawl to enjoy the best of one of the most popular Spanish dining traditions that I’m sure you’ll love.

10. Dip Churros in Chocolate at San Ginés

Entrance of Chocolatería San Ginés, a famous churro and chocolate spot—absolutely essential for any Madrid bucket list.

Opened in 1894, San Ginés is the place to go for late-night churros. It is located only a few steps from Puerta del Sol, and so worth any line you may encounter (especially if you visit midday during the weekend!).

But no worries if you’re in Madrid only for the weekend. The chocolateria is open 24 hours, so you can step in anytime for breakfast or after late-night partying.

Churros in Spain are traditionally served with a cup of thick, hot chocolate, making it the perfect sweet treat after some heavy-duty exploring!

11. Snack Your Way Through Mercado de San Miguel

Sign and olive skewers at Mercado de San Miguel, a gourmet market experience every foodie should include on their Madrid bucket list.

Mercado de San Miguel is a food-lovers’ paradise and a place steps away from Plaza Mayor.

This gourmet market offers everything from Spanish jamón ibérico to oysters, sangria, paella, dessert varieties, seafood dishes, and much more!

The iron and glass structure itself is so beautiful, although small. When you enter, you won’t know where to look, between the food, the crowds and the delicious food smells distracting you.

Though it’s a small space, and it’s quite popular, it’s totally worth the hype to step inside, see it for yourself, and grab a drink or a light lunch.

It’s a great way to explore a bit of Spanish food, especially if you don’t really know what to expect, or what to order at a restaurant on your own.

If that’s you, I recommend joining a local-led food tour to get the best sampling of Spanish food and understand its foundation, which is very interesting!
